Exact Probability Distribution versus Entropy
نویسنده
چکیده
The problem addressed concerns the determination of the average number of successive attempts of guessing a word of a certain length consisting of letters with given probabilities of occurrence. Both firstand second-order approximations to a natural language are considered. The guessing strategy used is guessing words in decreasing order of probability. When word and alphabet sizes are large, approximations are necessary in order to estimate the number of guesses. Several kinds of approximations are discussed demonstrating moderate requirements regarding both memory and central processing unit (CPU) time. When considering realistic sizes of alphabets and words (100), the number of guesses can be estimated within minutes with reasonable accuracy (a few percent) and may therefore constitute an alternative to, e.g., various entropy expressions. For many probability distributions, the density of the logarithm of probability products is close to a normal distribution. For those cases, it is possible to derive an analytical expression for the average number of guesses. The proportion of guesses needed on average compared to the total number decreases almost exponentially with the word length. The leading term in an asymptotic expansion can be used to estimate the number of guesses for large word lengths. Comparisons with analytical lower bounds and entropy expressions are also provided.

Determination of Maximum Bayesian Entropy Probability Distribution
In this paper, we consider the determination methods of maximum entropy multivariate distributions with given prior under the constraints, that the marginal distributions or the marginals and covariance matrix are prescribed. Next, some numerical solutions are considered for the cases of unavailable closed form of solutions. Finally, these methods are illustrated via some numerical examples.
متن کاملVelocity Distribution in the 90-degree Bend based on the Probability and Entropy Concept
Practical concept of velocity distribution of pressure flow in the bends is interesting and hence, the professional engineering design has been investigated in the current study. This paper shows that velocity distribution in the bends can be analyzed in terms of the probability distributions. The concept of entropy based on the probability is an applied and new approach to achieve velocity pro...
متن کاملEntropy-based Serviceability Assessment of Water Distribution Networks, Subjected to Natural and Man-Made Hazards
In this study a modified entropy-based measure is presented for evaluating the serviceability level of water distribution networks in which the hydraulic uncertainties (flow rates in pipes) as well as the uncertainties due to mechanical parameters (failure probabilities of links) are considered simultaneously. In the proposed entropy calculation method, the connectivity order of the network dem...
متن کاملExact maximum coverage probabilities of confidence intervals with increasing bounds for Poisson distribution mean
A Poisson distribution is well used as a standard model for analyzing count data. So the Poisson distribution parameter estimation is widely applied in practice. Providing accurate confidence intervals for the discrete distribution parameters is very difficult. So far, many asymptotic confidence intervals for the mean of Poisson distribution is provided. It is known that the coverag...
متن کاملMaximum Entropy Multivariate Density Estimation: An exact goodness-of-fit approach
We consider the problem of estimating the population probability distribution given a finite set of multivariate samples, using the maximum entropy approach. In strict keeping with Jaynes’ original definition, our precise formulation of the problem considers contributions only from the smoothness of the estimated distribution (as measured by its entropy) and the loss functional associated with ...
